Histoire de Napoleon

"AS IF HE WERE THE HERO OF A NOVEL": NORVINS' AND RAFFET'S RICHLY ILLUSTRATED HISTORY OF NAPOLEON, 1839 FIRST EDITION

(NAPOLEON) (RAFFET, illustrator) NORVINS, (Jacques Marquet) de. Histoire de Napoleon… Vignettes par Raffet. Paris: Furne et Cie., 1839. Large octavo, modern three-quarter green morocco gilt, raised bands, marbled boards and endpapers.

First edition of this richly illustrated life of Napoleon, with engraved frontispiece and hundreds of full-page and in-text wood-engraved illustrations by Raffet, handsomely bound.

"We have seen how Raffet… helped to further the Napoleonic tradition in France… Raffet treated Norvins' book as Gigoux had Gil Blas, commenting on every turn in Napoleon's career as if he were the hero of a novel. His appearance is transformed as he grows older, yet he is always the same. By Raffet's standards the 80 plates are unremarkable, but the 266 vignettes are marvels of miniature illustration. Each chapter has its headpiece, its initial letter, and its tailpiece" (Ray, 280, 281). Text in French. Ray, The Art of the French Illustrated Book 202.

Only occasional light foxing. Binding fine and attractive.
