(NAPOLEON) CHAPONNIER, Alexandre, a.k.a. POLYANTHE. Watercolor portrait. No place, circa 1815. Oval portrait, measuring 3-1/2 by 4-1/4 inches; matted with a rectangular piece of beige paper and mounted on cardstock, entire piece measures 7 by 9-1/4 inches.

Vibrant watercolor bust-length portrait of Napoleon, executed by Chaponnier fils, a.k.a. Polyanthe, in person during the Hundred Days War, matted with paper heavily captioned in an unknown hand identifying the artist and offering a selected chronology of Napoleon's life.

This lovely bust-length watercolor portrait of Napoleon features an extensive inscription in an unknown hand identifying the artist as "Chaponnier fils, d'après nature, pendant les Cent Jours" and offering a brief chronology of Napoleon's life. The artist, Chaponnier fils, better known as Polyanthe, was the son of a prominent engraver and painter of the same name. Polyanthe extended his professional interests to physician, painter, engraver, and playwright. According to the caption, this portrait was done from life during the Hundred Days War, a period which included Waterloo and the restoration of King Louis XVIII.

Portrait fine, a couple tiny waterspots and paper restoration to edges of paper mat. A handsome piece of Napoleonana.
