MCCARTHY, Justin. Reminiscences. New York and London: Harper & Brothers, 1899. Two volumes. Octavo, early 20th-century three-quarter olive morocco, elaborately gilt-decorated spines, raised bands, marbled endpapers, top edges gilt, uncut and mostly unopened.

First edition, with frontispiece portrait, handsomely bound in three-quarter morocco-gilt.

A compilation of recollections about important men and women who Justin McCarthy met during his life as an author, historian, and member of the Irish parliament where he chaired the Anti-Parnellite wing of the Nationalist Party. Among the many people McCarthy discusses are John Stuart Mill, Walt Whitman, Henry Ward Beecher, George Eliot, Lord Randolph Churchill, Anthony Trollope, Napoleon, Charles Stewart Parnell, Rudyard Kipling, and William Gladstone. Minor foxing to preliminary and concluding pages, only slightest wear and one tiny paint stain to bindings, extremities of morocco toned. A handsome set in near-fine condition.
