Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer

"WAKE UP, RUDOLPH. IT'S ALMOST NIGHT"

MAY, Robert L. Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer Picture Book. Racine: Whitman, (1951). Slim quarto, original staple-bound pictorial wrappers, scalloped edges.

"Authorized edition" of a charming tale of Santa's beloved ninth reindeer, originally written exclusively for Montgomery Ward by Robert May, this 1951 edition of Santa's gift for Rudolph designed by May for pre-school children, with colorful illustrations on every page, a lovely copy in original wrappers.

In 1939, Montgomery Ward and Company asked Robert May, a copywriter on its advertising staff, to write a booklet of Christmas verses as a premium for children to take home after visiting the department store's Santa Claus. May produced Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer, an endearing take on the familiar "ugly duckling" theme, written in verse that mimics Clement Moore's "Night Before Christmas." Montgomery Ward distributed 2,500,000 copies that holiday season. May subsequently sent a copy of Rudolph to his friend, songwriter Johnny Marks, who wrote the tune Gene Autry made famous. May left Montgomery Ward in 1951 to manage Rudolph's career. This wonderful 1951 edition offers a vignette written by May in 1951 for pre-schoolers, involving Santa's choice of a Christmas gift for Rudolph himself.

Interior very fresh, only lightest edge-wear to colorful wrappers. A bright near-fine copy.
