“SHAPES AND COLORS SPEAK FOR THEMSELVES”: LA FIGURE DANS L’OEUVRE DE LÉGER

LEGER, Fernand. MAUROIS, André. Mon Ami Léger, par André Maurois. Comment Je Conçois la Figure, par Fernand Léger. Paris: Louis Carré, 1952. Quarto, original pictorial self-wrappers.

First edition of this study of the figure in Léger’s oeuvre, with 16 illustrations, six printed in vivid color, three double-page. One of only 1000 copies printed on Arches at the renowned Mourlot press, with laid-in leaf from a 1952 exhibition of "La Figure dans l'Oeuvre de Fernand Léger" at Galerie Louis Carré.

During World War II, Maurois fled to the United States, where he met and befriended Fernand Léger, one of the most influential French artists of the 20th century. Largely categorized as a cubist painter, Léger had his own unique style that often broke with the cubist style, and he worked in numerous artistic media. He believed that "man needs color to live; it's just as necessary an element as fire and water." In addition to André Maurois' tribute, "My Friend Léger," this volume includes a brief essay by Léger himself, "How I Perceive the Figure." Text in French. Without scarce glassine. With laid-in leaf from an exhibition of "La Figure dans l'Oeuvre de Fernand Léger" at Galerie Louis Carré (June 6 – July 10, 1952).

A fine copy.
