Tomb of Thoutmosis IV

"AT LAST, FINAL EVIDENCE OF THE TRUE OWNERSHIP OF THE TOMB": PRESENTATION FIRST EDITION OF THEODORE DAVIS' AND HOWARD CARTER'S TOMB OF THOUTMOSIS IV

DAVIS, Theodore M.; CARTER, Howard; NEWBERRY, Percy E.; MASPERO, Gaston. The Tomb of Thoutmôsis IV. Westminster: Archibald Constable and Co., 1904. Folio (10 by 14 inches), original printed paper wrappers.

First edition of this richly illustrated catalogue of the discovery of the tomb of Tuthmosis IV in the Valley of the Kings, with color frontispiece, 28 full-page plates (one in color) and numerous in-text photographic illustrations of antiquities and inscriptions found at the site. Presentation copy, with a printed slip on the publisher's letterhead laid in stating: "With Mr. Theo. M. Davis' compliments."

The tomb of Tuthmosis IV had been plundered by grave robbers long before Theodore Davis' team, led by Howard Carter, began their excavations in the Valley of the Kings. While the robbers certainly took many items of value, they left behind chambers "strewn with antiquities," including the Pharaoh's inscribed sarcophagus, a richly decorated chariot, wooden throne panels, and many ceramic vases, "shawabti" figurines, wooden statuettes, wall paintings, amulets, textiles, and the denuded mummy of a boy. (Tuthmosis had been removed and reburied circa 1000 BC; his mummy was discovered in 1898 by Victor Loret.) American financier and lawyer Theodore M. Davis was one of the key figures in the archaeological exploration in the Valley of the Kings. The discovery of Tuthmosis' tomb led to a period of immensely fruitful excavations, culminating in Carter's 1922 discovery of the tomb of Tutankhamen. This folio volume includes an essay on the Pharaoh's life and monuments by renowned French Egyptologist Gaston Maspero, a paper on the physical characteristics of his mummy by G. Elliot Smith, and a richly detailed catalogue prepared by lead explorer and excavator Howard Carter with Percy Newberry's assistance.

A bit of light wear to foot of spine and extremities of fragile original paper wrappers. Small hole to rear wrapper that extends through last four leaves of text. An extremely good presentation copy. Scarce.
