Roughly translated: "Since finding, on your desk, a book I know well [presumably the present volume], my curiosity leads me to flip through its pages. And the circumstances surrounding its creation come back to my memory. First, it was to have been two volumes, but then it came to its final form in some long months. And just in the moment when it should appear in bookstores, it is subject to a terrible measure: we stopped the sale to the public by order of Felix Faure, President of the French Republic. The author had reproduced, without his consent, the lunch menu of 14-26 August, 1897, on the Pothnau [the date of the French President's visit to the Czar in Russia; Pothnau was the name of a French cruiser]: but where is the Russian alliance? It remains a testament to the time: [half title], inscribed this day of 1918, in August, by your devoted lout, Léon Maillard." From a total edition of 1050 copies. Text in French.
