FINE DOCUMENT SIGNED BY THOMAS JEFFERSON AS PRESIDENT AND JAMES MADISON AS SECRETARY OF STATE

JEFFERSON, Thomas. Ship's papers signed. New York: July 17, 1805. Folio (10-1/2 by 14-3/4 inches), one leaf, engraved on the recto and finished by hand. Floated on silk with portraits of Madison and Jefferson, framed; entire piece measures 39 by 26 inches.

Fine ornate vellum Ship's Passport for the Ship Martha of New York, signed by Jefferson as President, countersigned by Madison as Secretary of State, with two engraved maritime images and the original paper seal.

Sea letters had long been used to establish proof of nationality and guarantee protection for ships. The document reads in part: "SUFFER the Ship Martha of New York… of the burthen of three hundred and forty of 67/95 tons or thereabouts, mounted with no guns, navigated with twenty men, TO PASS with her Company, Passengers, Goods and Merchandize, without any hindrance, seizure or molestation: the said Ship appearing, by good testimony, to belong to one or more of the Citizens of the United States, and to him or them only. GIVEN under my Hand and the Seal of the United States of America, the 17th day of July in the year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred and five. [signed] Th. Jefferson. By the President. [signed] James Madison Secretary of State. State of New York." Countersigned by David Gettson, collector." The top edge is scalloped through the top engraving, as was the custom, with the collector holding a matching document that completed the engraving.

Fold lines. Jefferson's signature large and clear, Madison's signature a bit lighter. A wonderful document signed by two founding fathers.
