Travels in the Island of Iceland

“A COUNTRY WHICH MUST EVER BE INTERESTING, BOTH TO THE MORAL AND PHYSICAL OBSERVER”: FIRST EDITION OF MACKENZIE’S TRAVELS IN ICELAND, 1811, WITH HAND-COLORED AQUATINTS AND LARGE FOLDING MAP

MACKENZIE, George Steuart. Travels in the Island of Iceland, During the Summer of the Year MDCCCX. Edinburgh: Printed by Thomas Allen for Archibald Constable et al., 1811. Quarto, contemporary three-quarter brown morocco gilt, raised bands, marbled boards.

Scarce first edition of Mackenzie’s account of his Icelandic travels, in which he reports on “almost every topic on which a traveler is expected to give information… all evidently the result of much previous knowledge, good sense and information collected on the spot” (Allibone, 1176), illustrated with 15 engraved plates (five folding and eight hand-colored), four folding tables and a large (19-by-23 inch folding map), handsomely bound.

“Mackenzie throughout his life devoted much time to the study of mineralogy and geology. His interest in those subjects led him in 1810 to undertake a journey to Iceland, when he was accompanied by Dr. (afterwards Sir Henry) Holland and Dr. Richard Bright. Sir Charles Lyell speaks with admiration of ‘the magnificent collection of mineralogical treasures’ which he made during his travels. In 1811 was published the Travels in Iceland, the joint production of the three travelers. To this work he contributed the narrative of the voyage and the travels, and the chapters on the mineralogy, rural economy and commerce of the island… [The book] contains much information of permanent interest on the social and economic condition of Iceland” (DNB). Illustrated with 15 plates (including five folding and eight hand-colored mounted aquatints), four folding tables and a 19-by-23 inch folding map, color-heightened by hand, of Iceland. Lowndes, 1440-41. Bookplates.
