DOUGLAS MACARTHUR'S TWO-STAR MAJOR GENERAL'S CAR FLAG

MACARTHUR, Douglas. MacArthur Car Flag. No place, circa 1930s. Fabric flag measuring 16-3/4 by 11-1/2 inches with 3/4-inch gold cotton fringe, red field with two with white, five-point stars.

Bright two-star major general's car flag, flown on General Douglas MacArthur's official Army vehicle.

MacArthur joined the U.S. Army as a second lieutenant in 1903 after graduating from West Point Military Academy; he ultimately rose to the rank of five-star general. He served three times as a two-star major general: from 1925 to 1930; from 1935 to 1937; and for one day, July 26, 1941, being promoted to lieutenant general on July 26, 1941. MacArthur served in WWI, rising to the rank of Chief of Staff in 1930. In 1937 he retired from the U.S. Army to become a field marshall in the Phillipine Army. He was recalled to service in the U.S. Army in 1941 as a major general, and earned distinction during WWII as the Supreme Commander of the Southwest Pacific Theater, notably presiding over the surrender of Japan and serving as military governor of the Japanese Home Islands. He then served as commander of the United Nations forces during the Korean War, finally retiring from active service in 1951. This flag, with its two white stars on a red field, was flown on MacArthur's official Army vehicle during one of his commissions as a major general. This flag was given by MacArthur to his close aide General Courtney Whitney, who served on MacArthur's staff from 1944 to 1951; in 1956 Whitney published the biography MacArthur: His Rendezvous with History.

Flag bright and fresh with one spot of soiling above the first star. A fine, beautiful example of a military car flag, with excellent provenance.
