"OLD SOLDIERS NEVER DIE; THEY JUST FADE AWAY": FIRST EDITION OF DUTY HONOR COUNTRY, INSCRIBED BY GENERAL MACARTHUR

MACARTHUR, Douglas. Duty Honor Country. Two Memorable Addresses. New York: Rolton House, (1962). Slim octavo, original brown paper boards, original dust jacket.

First edition of two of MacArthur's best-loved speeches, inscribed: "To Mrs. Reis—with cordial best wishes. Douglas MacArthur."

On April 19, 1951, before a joint session of Congress, Douglas MacArthur announced his resignation as General of the Army in a moving speech. His closing words, "old soldiers never die; they just fade away," headlined nearly ever newspaper in the days that followed. The public clamored for more. Then, 11 years later, in a speech before West Point, MacArthur reappeared without notes and presented a speech later called, "Duty Honor Country," in which he explained the meaning of military service and the deep bond of military men, however they later came to be perceived, to the Corp of Cadets. This book marks the first time the two important speeches were combined for a single publication.

Book fine, dust jacket with slightest soiling, light wear and toning to extremities, and a couple tiny tape repairs to verso. A near-fine inscribed copy.
