(MACARTHUR, Douglas) WHITNEY, Courtney. MacArthur: His Rendezvous with History. New York: Alfred A. Knopf, 1956. Octavo, original half blue cloth, original dust jacket.
First edition of this important contemporary history of the career of General Douglas MacArthur, authored by his senior aide and good friend, Major General Courtney Whitney, signed on the half title by MacArthur and inscribed by Whitney: "To Basil Brewer with cordial regard, Courtney Whitney."
MacArthur: His Rendezvous with History, covers the years 1941 to 1951 in the legendary career of General Douglas MacArthur, who was Supreme Commander of the Allied forces in the South Pacific and accepted Japan's surrender. The author, Major General Courtney Whitney, received a law degree from George Washington University, after which he went into private practice in Manila. He joined MacArthur's WWII staff, directing MacArthur's guerrilla army in the Philippines, and served as a senior official during the occupation of Japan. "First edition" stated on copyright page. The recipient was most likely the influential publisher of the New Bedford (Massachusetts) Standard-Times, a staunch Republican who nevertheless backed U.S. Congressman John F. Kennedy in his successful Senate bid.
