Signed limited first edition of this collection of letters written by renowned mountaineer and explorer George Lowe while ascending Everest in 1953 with Edmund Hillary as a crucial member of John Hunt's successful expedition. This is number 43 of only 60 copies produced and signed by the editor Huw Lewis-Jones, by Jan Morris, who wrote the foreword, and by Peter Hillary, who wrote the afterword. With a photographic portrait of Lowe made by Edmund Hillary at Base Camp in 1953, and a cutting of the fabric of the sleeping bag he used during the 1953 expedition.
George Lowe wrote these personal letters to his family in New Zealand while climbing Everest in 1953. Illustrated with photographs, facsimiles, and maps. The endpapers feature an illustration of Everest by Julian Heaton Cooper, son of William Heaton Cooper, who designed the dust jacket design for John Hunt's book The Ascent of Everest.
