CONFEDERATE GENERAL JAMES LONGSTREET'S SIGNATURE, HANDSOMELY FRAMED WITH ENGRAVED PORTRAIT
LONGSTREET, James. Signature with portrait. No place, circa 1848. Signature on clipped leaf measuring approximately 1 by 4 inches; handsomely framed with engraved portrait, entire piece measures 9-1/2 by 12-1/2 inches.
Handsome framed piece with the signature of James Longstreet as "James Longstreet, Capt. … Bt. Maj.," beneath engraved portrait.
A classmate of Grant's at West Point—and often claimed to have been Grant's best man at his wedding in 1848—Longstreet served alongside Grant in the Mexican-American War, with both distinguishing themselves at the Battles of Molino del Rey and Chapultepec in 1847. Longstreet's actions at those battles earned him a promotion to brevet major. During the Civil War, "Longstreet made his greatest contributions serving under Lee, who called him 'my Old War Horse' and 'the Staff of my right hand.' Contrary to myth, Longstreet, not Stonewall Jackson, was Lee's intimate confidant, close friend, and principal military adviser" (ANB).
A handsome piece.
