Mrs. Lincoln's Boston Cook Book

"MARKED A CHANGE IN CULINARY LITERATURE": MRS. LINCOLN'S BOSTON COOK BOOK, 1884 FIRST EDITION

LINCOLN, Mary Johnson (Bailey). Mrs. Lincoln's Boston Cook Book. What to Do and What Not to Do in Cooking. Boston: Roberts Brothers, 1884. Octavo, original three-quarter brown cloth, marbled boards. Housed in a custom clamshell box.

First edition of Mrs. Lincoln's illustrated Boston cookbook, which "instantly became the standard kitchen companion," in original binding.

"This book… marked a change in culinary literature. Having directed the Boston Cooking School (est. 1879), she was able to arrange her material in an orderly plan, and to set it forth in plain, sensible language that housewives could understand. While it instantly became the standard kitchen companion, it had still greater effect in shaping the course of early work in domestic science in grade and normal schools. Fanny Farmer's Cook Book is a direct outgrowth from this" (Grolier Club, 100 Influential American Books 86). Mrs. Lincoln's goal in writing this book was to compile "not only a collection of recipes, given briefly for the experienced housekeeper, and with sufficient clearness for the beginner, but which shall also embody enough of physiology, and of the chemistry and philosophy of food, to make every principle intelligible to a child and interesting to the mature mind" (Preface). According to the Grolier Club, "Mrs. Lincoln was the first to succeed in this task." With an additional gathering of 12 blank leaves of heavier paper stock at rear, presumably for notes (still blank). Cagle & Stafford 478. Grolier Club, One Hundred Influential American Books Printed Before 1900, 116-17. Early owner ink signature to front free endpaper.

Very short closed tear to outer edge of title page; a few faint marginal stains and signs of use. Only minor rubbing to spine ends and corners, original binding in near-fine condition, gilt lettering bright.
