T.E. LAWRENCE'S POSTHUMOUS ORIENTAL ASSEMBLY, FEATURING THE SUPPRESSED INTRODUCTION TO SEVEN PILLARS OF WISDOM AND 129 PHOTOGRAVURES BY LAWRENCE, MOST NEVER BEFORE PUBLISHED

LAWRENCE, T.E. Oriental Assembly. London: Williams and Norgate, (1939). Octavo, original brown cloth, original dust jacket.

First edition of Lawrence's previously uncollected works on the East, including the first printing of the suppressed introductory chapter of Seven Pillars of Wisdom and the first publication in book form of several key essays, illustrated by in-text sketches, full-page maps and the facsimile of a diary page, along with 129 black-and-white photogravure plates, including a desert panorama of an Arab camp and many showing Feisel's army on the march.

Edited by his brother and published four years after Lawrence's death, Oriental Assembly contains the diary of his 1911 trek across Syria and his early thoughts on what would become The Seven Pillars of Wisdom. The suppressed introduction to that work, "one of the greatest books ever written in the English language" (Wilson, 55), is published here for the first time, as are most of the 125 photogravure plates of photographs taken by Lawrence during the Revolt in the Desert. Also included are several writings first published here in book form: Lawrence's essay on artist Eric Kennington, Lawrence's essay "The Changing East" (issued anonymously in the journal Round Table, 1920) and his "Evolution of a Revolt," (Army Quarterly, 1920), which substantially informs Chapter 33 of Seven Pillars of Wisdom. Foreword by A.W. Lawrence. First issue, with page 16 numbered "6." O'Brien A221. See Duval 56. Contemporary owner gift inscription. Owner signature.

Book with faint foxing to preliminaries and edges of text block, price-clipped dust jacket with only mild toning to spine. An about-fine copy.
