FIRST EDITION OF D.H. LAWRENCE'S WOMEN IN LOVE, ONE OF ONLY 1250 COPIES

LAWRENCE, D.H. Women in Love. New York: Privately Printed For Subscribers Only, 1920. Octavo, original blue cloth, uncut. $2500.

Limited first edition, number 997 of 1250 copies, of this sequel to Lawrence's earlier controversial novel The Rainbow (1915), continuing to track the loves and lives of the Brangwen sisters, Gudrun and Ursula.

"Though Lawrence completed Women in Love in 1916, he was unable to publish it until November 1920— and then only privately in New York. The suppression of the novel made Lawrence desperately poor… He abandoned all hope of achieving popular success in England and turned to America as his potential audience" (Meyers, 196). In his Women in Love, he brilliantly captures the post-war longing for a new world. "No English novel so closely resembles Greek tragedy" (Howard Jacobson). Lawrence's treatment of sexuality, however, was too frank for the mores of his time. Upon the appearance of Women in Love one reviewer wrote, "I know dirt when I smell it, and here is dirt in heaps— festering, putrid heaps which smell to high Heaven" (Charles Pilley). Very few copies were numbered in red (as here), with only two copies known to bibliographer Roberts. Issued without dust jacket. Roberts A15. Cutler, 99. Morocco bookplate.

Interior generally fine, light wear, slight soiling to spine of original cloth. An extremely good copy.
