A RICHLY ILLUSTRATED TROVE OF JAPANESE ART AND HANDICRAFTS

(JAPAN) JOLY, Henri. Legend in Japanese Art. A Description of Historical Episodes, Legendary Characters, Folk-Lore, Myths, Religious Symbolism Illustrated in the Arts of Old Japan. London: John Lane The Bodley Head, 1908. Large thick quarto, contemporary three-quarter blue morocco gilt, raised bands, marbled endpapers, all edges gilt.

First edition of this richly illustrated survey of Japanese legends and folklore as reflected in that nation’s artworks, with nearly 700 photographic illustrations and reproductions, 16 in color. Handsomely bound by Bumpus.

Henri Joly here surveys the legendary and religious characters depicted in a variety of Japanese arts and artifacts and summarizes their stories. The Meiji Restoration of 1868, which opened Japan somewhat to the West and reduced the Samurai class, led to a flood of Japanese items finding their way into the possession of European collectors. Joly—himself an avid collector—compiled this guide for his own reference and edification, only publishing it eventually at the insistence of his fellow collectors. Original pictorial cloth front cover and spine bound in at rear of volume. Bookplate; old dealer description tipped to front flyleaf.

A bit of foxing to first few pages only. Fine condition.
