“IN THE END THE PRESIDENT MUST DECIDE”: FIRST EDITION OF VANTAGE POINT, SIGNED BY PRESIDENT LYNDON JOHNSON

JOHNSON, Lyndon Baines. The Vantage Point. Perspectives of the Presidency, 1963-1969. New York: Holt, Rinehart & Winston, (1971). Octavo, original red cloth, cartographic and facsimile endpapers, original dust jacket.

First edition of President Lyndon Johnson’s extensively illustrated memoirs, signed by him on a tipped-in leaf as issued by the First Edition Circle through Kroch’s & Brentano’s of Chicago.

"One of the most influential political figures of the last 50 years," President Lyndon Johnson left behind one of the America's most debated legacies (Commentary). "Johnson's presidency began and ended with tragedy. He came into office after the death of a popular young president and provided needed continuity and stability… [But] reaction to his Great Society and to broader trends helped spawn a dramatic political polarization in the United States that some historians have labeled a conservative counterrevolution. Further clouding Johnson's legacy was the devastating outcome of the Vietnam War" (Miller Center of Public Affairs). Johnson's informative memoir, The Vantage Point, was published only two years before his death and was partially ghostwritten by award-winning historian Doris Kearns, who had served as his special assistant in the White House and would later author her own critically praised history of the Johnson years. With "First Edition" on copyright page. Illustrated with numerous black-and-white photographs.

Book fine, dust jacket with almost none of the usual bubbling of lamination. An about-fine copy.
