HUNTER, William S. Hunter’s Ottawa Scenery. Ottawa City: William S. Hunter, 1855. Thin folio, modern blue cloth, all edges gilt, uncut; pp. 19.

First edition of the first book to include illustrations engraved by Winslow Homer, with vignette title page, large folding map and 14 fine tinted lithographs of views of Ottawa City and its vicinity, including one plate initialed by Homer and five others attributed to him.

Homer was apprenticed to the engraver J.H. Bufford of Boston, whose shop actually produced the plates, including one (“View of Locks, Entrance of Rideau Canal”) initialed by Homer and five other unsigned views usually attributed to him. Views include bridges and locks and natural wonders such as the Rideau and Chaudiere Falls. Staton & Tremaine 3563. Sabin 33937. Abbey Travel 628 (with colored plates). Light marginal dampstaining, occasional faint foxing. A very good copy.
