“YOU ARE ALL A LOST GENERATION”: THE SUN ALSO RISES IN RARE SECOND-ISSUE PROOF DUST JACKET

HEMINGWAY, Ernest. The Sun Also Rises. New York: Charles Scribner's Sons, 1926. Octavo, original black cloth, gold paper labels, original dust jacket printed in gold and black, uncut. Housed in a custom full morocco clamshell box.

First edition, second issue, of one of Hemingway’s rarest and greatest novels, in rare second-issue proof dust jacket.

"The emergence of Hemingway… gave the Modern Movement one of its few men of action… [In The Sun Also Rises] the post-war disillusion and the post-war liberation are united in the physical enjoyment of living and the pains of love. Perhaps that is what expatriation was about… No other writer stepped so suddenly into fame, or destroyed with such insouciance so many other writers or ways of writing or became such an immediate symbol of an age" (Connolly, 50). The Sun Also Rises was an immediate success. The first edition, which consisted of only 5090 copies, sold out within two months of the October release. Second issue, with "stopped" spelled correctly on page 181, line 26, and rare second-issue proof dust jacket with "In Our Time" corrected on the front panel, but with flaps and rear panel unprinted. Hanneman A6a.

Book near-fine, with a few spots of faint foxing to interior and only minor rubbing to binding. Price-clipped dust jacket worn with a few faint stains, toning particularly to spine, joints split, and several old tape repairs to verso.
