Spanish Earth

“THE CLENCHED FIST OF REPUBLICAN SPAIN”

HEMINGWAY, Ernest. The Spanish Earth. Cleveland: J.B. Savage, 1938. Octavo, original tan cloth printed in black and orange. Housed in a custom cloth clamshell box.

Limited first edition, number 289 of only 1000 copies.

Intended to help raise money for the Loyalist cause in the Spanish Civil War, within is a transcript of Hemingway's narration for the sound track of Joris Ivens' classic film The Spanish Earth (1937), and Hemingway's essay "The Heat and The Cold," which appeared in Verve earlier the same year. With introduction by Jasper Wood and illustrations by Frederick Russell. With plain tan endpapers and Wood's printed statement on the rear pastedown (as opposed to the far rarer pictorial endpapers). Without scarce original glassine. Hanneman A15a. Owner signature.

A fine copy.
