First edition of this exceptional photobook with stellar images by leading 20th-century photographers, a presentation/association copy inscribed in the year of publication by Édouard Boubat to his close friend, award-winning photojournalist Peter Turnley: “Pour Peter et Amy avec l’invisible Edouard. Le 27 Juin 1998,” with over 120 photogravures (most full page).
Featuring the photographs of Alfred Eisenstaedt, Manuel Alvarez Bravo, Horace Bristol, Carl Mydans, Joe Rosenthal, Jean-Philippe Charbonnier, Gordon Parks, Andreas Feininger, Eve Arnold, Mark Riboud, Edouard Boubat, Elliott Erwitt, Mary Ellen Mark, Eikoh Hosoe, Jeanloup Sieff, Helmut Newton, Annie Leibovitz, Herb Ritts, Sebastião Salgado, and Peter Lindbergh. Mark Edward Harris interviewed each of these pivotal photographers and photographed them for this volume. Five images were chosen to represent each person, accompanied by the photographer’s commentary. This copy was Édouard Boubat’s complimentary copy from the publisher, with publisher’s note laid in. Boubat was “one of the most distinguished photographers in the post-World War II period. Praised for his remarkable reportage, he did not shoot wars and disasters but instead humankind as it exists in the ‘real’ world” (McDarrah, 49). The image selected for the cover of the volume was by Boubat, who also wrote the Foreword. Text in French. From the library of respected Paris-based photojournalist Peter Turnley, who has described his 24-year-old friendship with Boubat as a key influence, noting, “Boubat’s spirit touched me in profound and inspiring ways, as did his photography” (Digital Journalist). Signed by Turnley on the half title.
A fine copy with a wonderful association and inscription.
