GREENE, Graham. The Great Jowett. London: Bodley Head, (1981). Slim octavo, original red cloth, original acetate.

Signed limited first edition of one of Greene's first radio plays, broadcast on the BBC in 1939 but not published until this edition, number 356 of 525 copies signed by Greene (500 for sale). a handsome copy.

The Great Jowett, one of Greene’s first radio plays, was broadcast on the BBC on May 6, 1939, soon after publication of Brighton Beach (1938) and the same year as The Confidential Agent. The play remained unpublished until this edition, which was issued following a 1980 BBC-TV production that starred Alan Bennett as Benjamin Jowett, the Victorian Master of Balliol College, Oxford, Greene’s old college. Jowett is “one of Greene’s few characters who do not fail in the worldly sense, but childhood sufferings still mold his reactions to life” (Pandit, Novels of Graham Greene). The 1939 radio broadcast was produced and narrated by Stephen Potter, who commissioned Greene to write the play. Greene was particularly drawn to the opportunity for interaction "with the producer and the players while the final shape of the play was being hammered out at rehearsals." His copy of the script, which has survived, shows that at the final rehearsals, Greene was still adding "new material to develop points and create effects which sounded well over the microphone" (West, Quest for Graham Greene, 84). (Wise & Hill, Works I:A61). Not in Miller. Bookseller ticket.

Book fine; minor tape reinforcement to verso of rear acetate panel.
