Military and Civil Life of Ulysses S. Grant

"THE 'DISCOVERER OF THE UNION' WAS NO LESS AN EVANGEL OF PEACE, THAN THE FOUNDER OF A PLACE FOR THIS NATION, HIGHER, BROADER AND MORE ENDURING THAN IT EVER BEFORE OCCUPIED AMONG THE NATIONS OF THE EARTH": BOYD'S MILITARY AND CIVIL LIFE OF ULYSSES S. GRANT, 1885

(GRANT, Ulysses S.) BOYD, James P. Military and Civil Life of Ulysses S. Grant. Leading Soldier of the Age; President of the United States; Loved and Honored American Citizen; The World's Most Distinguished Man. Philadelphia, Pennsylvania and St. Louis, Missouri: Scammell, 1885. Octavo, original three-quarter blind- and gilt-stamped morocco, gilt portrait of Grant on front board, patterned endpapers.

Early edition of this richly illustrated biography of Ulysses S. Grant, in publisher's three-quarter morocco-gilt.

Written just after Grant's death, this biography traces Grant's life and heritage from his grandfather's service in the Revolution to his death. Boyd focuses the majority of his book on Grant's illustrious military career (including the Civil War) and his time as President of the United States. This is an early edition, published the same year as the Standard Publishing Co. first edition. See Dornbusch II:2000.

Occasional foxing and soiling to interior, binding handsome. A near-fine copy.
