Ego and the Id

"MODERN PSYCHIATRY BEGAN WITH FREUD": FIRST EDITION IN ENGLISH OF THE EGO AND THE ID, 1927, PRINTED BY VIRGINIA AND LEONARD WOOLF AT THE HOGARTH PRESS

FREUD, Sigmund. The Ego and the Id. London: Hogarth Press, 1927. Octavo, modern full blue straight-grain morocco gilt, red paneled morocco inlays, raised bands, marbled endpapers, uncut.

First edition in English of one of Freud's most famous works, at the core of his revolutionary effort to define "'a general psychology' that reached beyond the world of neuroses" (New York Times), issued by Virginia and Leonard Woolf's Hogarth Press.

"Modern psychiatry began with Freud… [His] revolutionary theory of human personality… made him, in a few short years, one of the most controversial figures in history." To biographer Peter Gay, Freud's The Ego and the Id and his Beyond the Pleasure Principle (1920) were central to defining "'a general psychology' that reached beyond the world of neuroses to that of 'normal mental activity" (New York Times). "In early March 1924 the Woolf's moved to 52 Tavistock Square and installed the Hogarth Press in the large basement there. At about this same time James Strachey asked Leonard and Virginia, on behalf of Dr. Ernest Jones, if the Press would publish the International Psycho-Analytical Library, including Freud's Collected Papers" (Orr, Virginia Woolf and Freud). The Hogarth Press "became the authorized publisher for Sigmund Freud in England and was the first to make psychoanalytic theory available in English. Under the general editorship of Dr. Jones, the Hogarth Press published 27 of the Institute's papers between 1924 and 1946," including this first edition in English of The Ego and the Id (University of Delaware). Initially issued in German in 1923. No. 12 in The International Psycho-Analytical Library, edited by Ernest Jones. Translation into English by Joan Riviere. With advertisement page at rear. Grinstein 121. Owner signature above title page.
