ELIJAH THE SLAVE, PRESENTATION ASSOCIATION COPY WARMLY INSCRIBED BY SINGER
SINGER, I.B. Elijah the Slave. Translated from the Yiddish by the author and Elizabeth Shub. New York: Farrar, Straus and Giroux, (1970). Slim quarto, original purple cloth, pictorial endpapers, original dust jacket.
First edition, warmly inscribed and signed by Singer on the half title to translator Elizabeth Shub, “To my great friend and great editor with love, Isaac.”
Elizabeth Shub was an author, editor, and translator, and long-time friend to Singer. It was she who first suggested to Singer that he write a children’s book; he agreed under the condition that she translate it. The result was the award-winning Zlateh the Goat (published 1966), followed by other collaborations, including this title.
Faintest toning to cloth, mild edge-wear and light toning to dust jacket. A near-fine copy with a significant association.
