SHELBY FOOTE’S PERSONAL PRE-PUBLICATION COPY OF HIS CIVIL WAR NOVEL SHILOH, SIGNED BY HIM

FOOTE, Shelby. Shiloh. New York: Random House, (1976). Octavo, original half blue cloth, original dust jacket. $1800.

Later edition of Foote’s best known novel, his own advance copy signed, “Shelby Foote, personal copy, received 17 July 1976; publication 7 Sep,” with an early photograph of Foote laid in.

First published by Dial in 1952, Shelby Foote's Shiloh earned high praise on publication as "a brilliant book… [It] became his best known novel and… offered an affecting account of the famous Civil War battle through the monologues of soldiers in the blue and the gray." Shiloh, together with Foote's award-winning Civil War histories, placed him in the "distinguished company of Civil War historians that included Bruce Catton, Allan Nevins and Douglas Southall Freeman" (New York Times). Broadfoot, 165. Seagrave, 308. Wright 340.

Book fine, dust jacket with only slight wear to extremities. A very nearly fine signed copy with outstanding provenance.
