SIGNED BY JAMES ELLROY, HIS FIRST BOOK, BROWN’S REQUIEM

ELLROY, James. Brown’s Requiem. London, New York: Allison & Busby, (1984). Octavo, original black paper boards, original dust jacket.

First edition, cloth issue, of the first book by Ellroy, “one of the great American writers of our time” (Los Angeles Times Book Review), his debut mystery signed by him on the title page.

Brown’s Requiem launched the career of noir novelist James Ellroy, “one of the great American writers of our time” (Los Angeles Times Book Review). A fast-moving private-eye mystery that pays tribute to the influence of Raymond Chandler, Brown’s Requirm also revisits “many of Ellroy’s life experiences. As he would say in [the 1993 film] Demon Dog, his first novel includes his German-American background and his love of classical music, his career as a caddy, or looper, and L.A.’s Burns Park neighborhood… He adds in Demon Dog that his debut novel also included issues long kept inside him that were clamoring for release” (Wolfe, Like Hot Knives, 52). Issued in wrappers only in 1981. Hubin I:265.

A fine signed copy.
