STATE LETTERS OF QUEEN ELIZABETH, 1740 FOLIO FIRST EDITION, WITH NUMEROUS FACSIMILE SIGNATURES

(ELIZABETH) FORBES, Patrick, editor. A Full View of the Public Transactions in the Reign of Q. Elizabeth: or a Particular Account of all the Memorable Affairs of that Queen. London: by J. Bettenham, and sold by G. Hawkins, 1740. Two volumes bound in one. Thick folio (8-1/2 by 13 inches), contemporary half calf rebacked with original spine and spine label neatly laid down, raised bands, contemporary marbled boards.

First edition of this important folio collection of state letters from the reign of Elizabeth printed here for the first time from the originals in the Cottonian Library and elsewhere, with numerous facsimile signatures in text.

This collection reprints "a series of letters and other papers of state, written by Queen Elizabeth and her principal ministers, and by the foreign princes and ministers with whom she had negotiations, published from original and authentic manuscripts in the Paper Office, Cottonian Library, and other public and private repositories." "We have no way left to come at any certainty in the affairs of that queen, but by having recourse to the letters and other authentic papers of persons concerned in the administration. But not many of these have been hitherto published" (iii). Bound with both half titles and title pages. Lowndes, 817. Owner signature of Thomas Burnet, judge and son of Gilbert Burnet, on the title page; owner signature of Alex Fraser Tytler (1747-1813), Scottish advocate, judge, writer and historian, professor of Greek and Roman Antiquities at the University of Edinburgh.

Very faint evidence of dampstain, otherwise interior clean and fresh; light wear to boards. An extremely good, handsome copy.
