“AMONG HIS MOST BEAUTIFUL LYRICS”: ONE OF ONLY 600 COPIES SIGNED BY T.S. ELIOT
ELIOT, T.S. Ash-Wednesday. New York and London: Fountain Press and Faber & Faber, 1930. Slim octavo, original blue cloth, top edge gilt, uncut, original slipcase.
Signed limited first edition, number 445 of 600 copies printed by the Curwen Press and signed by T.S. Eliot.
Ash-Wednesday "is one of the most moving poems [Eliot] has written, and perhaps the most perfect" (Edwin Muir). These poems "represent the first fruits of Eliot's conversion after the despair of 'The Hollow Men', and are among his most beautiful lyrics" (Connolly, 65). This poem was the first long poem Eliot wrote after his conversion to Anglicanism three years earlier. Drawing themes and imagery from Dante's Purgatorio, it concentrates on the struggle for faith, hope, and transcendence. Without scarce glassine. Gallup A15.
A bit of wear to slipcase. Book lovely and about-fine.
