Witness to Our Time

FROM THE LIBRARY OF TRUMAN CAPOTE

EISENSTAEDT, Alfred. Witness to Our Time. New York: Viking, (1966). Folio, original gray cloth, pictorial endpapers, original dust jacket.

First edition of this impressive photobook honoring the 30th Anniversary of Life Magazine and the work of Eisenstaedt, a rare association copy from the library of Truman Capote, with his initials on the half title, featuring over 400 full-color and black-and-white photographic images, including Eisenstaedt’s image of a young Capote skating at Rockefeller Center.

The German-born “Alfred Eisenstaedt became famous as the quintessential Life photographer, producing more than 2,500 picture stories and 90 covers for the magazine. He was especially renowned for his ability to capture memorable images of important people in the news, including statesmen, movie stars and artists.” This special 30th Anniversary edition especially features Eisenstaedt’s photograph of “an exuberant American sailor kissing a nurse in a dancelike dip” in Times Square on V-J Day: a Life cover that “quickly became a classic example of photojournalism” (New York Times). Foreward by Henry Luce. This rare association copy is from the library of Truman Capote, with his penciled initials on the half title and a wonderful image of him taken by Eisenstaedt in 1959 in Rockefeller Center (239).

Book fine; light edge-wear with minor chipping and tiny closed tears to bright dust jacket. A wonderful association copy in near-fine condition.
