WITH EDISON AT SCHENECTADY, 1892, WITH 24 STRIKING MOUNTED PHOTOGRAPHS

(EDISON, Thomas A.) BUTLER, William H. With Edison at Schenectady. Schenectady, 1892. Oblong quarto, sympathetically rebound in full brown morocco with front panel inlaid, all edges gilt.

First edition, with 24 large black-and-white photographs mounted to heavy cardstock, portraying Edison's operations in Schenectady just as they were about to become General Electric.

Edison Machine Works was founded by Thomas Edison around 1880 to produce the large dynamos and motors necessary for the developing electric light utilities, particularly in New York City. It quickly outgrew its lower Manhattan location, and finally relocated upstate to Schenectady, New York in 1886. In 1892, the year these photographs were taken, in part through a series of mergers, Edison became General Electric, headquartered in Schenectady. That merger effectively ended Thomas Edison's control of the company.

Photographs fine and lovely.
