“ADIÓS, AMIGO DONALD!”: THE THREE CABALLEROS, INSCRIBED BY WALT DISNEY

PALMER, H. Marion. The Three Caballeros. New York: Random House, (1944). Quarto, original pictorial boards, original dust jacket. Housed in a custom clamshell box.

First edition, inscribed on the front free endpaper, “To Corynn with my very best, Walt Disney.”

Premiering in Mexico City on December 21, 1944, The Three Caballeros combines live action and animation, featuring Donald Duck in locations such as Mexico and Brazil. As many of the studio's members were drafted during World War II, The Three Caballeros and other Disney films from the early 40s were structured as series of multiple short segments that were much easier to produce than full-length single narrative films. As part of the studio's south of the border good-will program, Disney employed many famous Mexican film stars (Aurora Miranda, Dora Luz, and dancer Carmen Molina) and Manuel Esperón, prolific composer for the thriving Mexican film industry. The two "Latin" Caballeros that join Donald Duck—the Brazilian parrot José Carioca and the Mexican rooster Panchito Pistoles—each appeared in a number of other Disney films. They have recently been featured at the Mexican pavilion at Disney's Epcot Center.

Book with infrequent faint foxing to text and boards, bright price-clipped dust jacket with shallow chipping, a few short closed tears, and two tiny tears with loss to flap folds. A title almost never seen inscribed by Disney.
