OUR FRIEND THE ATOM, INSCRIBED BY WALT DISNEY

(DISNEY, Walt) HABER, Heinz. The Walt Disney Story of Our Friend the Atom. New York: Simon and Schuster, 1956. Quarto, original half black cloth, pictorial stiff paper boards, pictorial endpapers, original dust jacket.

First edition of this introduction to atomic science for young readers, fully illustrated in color by Disney Studio artists, inscribed on the half title with characteristic flourish, by Walt Disney — “To —-, with best wishes, Walt Disney.”

Walt Disney did more than simply entertain Americans; he also (and often at the same time) educated them, including about science. This generously illustrated volume—a companion volume to "Our Friend the Atom" on the Disneyland television program (and narrated by the author, German astrophysicist Heinz Haber, one of the many former Nazi scientists who came to the United States through "Project Paperclip")—offers young readers an introduction to atomic science: "how the atomic vessel was discovered, how man learned of its many marvelous secrets, how the atomic Genie was liberated, and what we must do to make him our friend and servant."

Book with light wear to corners, minor wear and chipping to edges of bright dust jacket. A near-fine copy, most desirable inscribed by Disney.
