“Serious music had never been so attractively portrayed and untold youngsters were drawn to Beethoven, Tchaikovsky and Stravinsky by the snippets they heard in Fantasia” (Lebrecht, 143). One of the pieces Disney chose to interpret was an abbreviated version of Tchaikovsky’s Nutcracker Suite, originally based on a tale by E.T.A. Hoffman. Conductor Leopold Stokowski, who helmed the Philadelphia Orchestra’s soundtrack for the film, provides an introduction to this book, which also includes sheet music of piano arrangements for “Dance of the Dewdrop Fairies,” “Chinese Dance,” “Blossom Ballet,” “Water Ballet,” “Russian Dance,” and “Waltz of the Flowers.” The title page is signed by ten animators who worked on Fantasia: Robert C. Cormack, Al Zinnen, Samuel Armstrong, Elmer Plummer, Arthur Byram, John Hench, Ethel Kulsar, Nino Carbe, Sylvia Moberly-Holland, and Graham Heid. In addition, in-text color illustrations have been signed by Plummer (four illustrations), Phil Eastman, Hench, Kulsar (five illustrations), Curt Perkins, and Cormack.
Interior fine; light wear to extremities of binding. Some wear to extremities of lightly worn dust jacket with tape repairs and two-inch closed tear to the spine and a half-inch open tear to spine, with two title letters perished. A wonderful copy, scarce signed by Disney and his animators.
