PRESENTATION/ASSOCIATION COPY INSCRIBED BY DIMAGGIO TO HIS LAWYER: JOLTIN' JOE'S "INSIDE STORY OF BASEBALL," WITH TWO LEGAL CONTRACTS RELATED TO THE BOOK ALSO SIGNED BY DIMAGGIO

DIMAGGIO, Joe. Baseball for Everyone. New York and Toronto: Whittlesey House (McGraw-Hill), (1948). Octavo, original red cloth, dust jacket supplied from another first edition copy. Housed in a custom clamshell box.

First edition of this "treasury of baseball lore and instruction," illustrated with nine photographs and 17 line cuts by Lenny Hollreiser, presentation/association copy boldly inscribed and signed by DiMaggio in blue ink on the half title to his lawyer Julian Rosenthal: "To my friend Julie, My very best wishes, Joe DiMaggio." With two legal contracts related to the sale and publication of the book, each also signed by DiMaggio, laid in.

The text of this "instructive and entertaining survey of the game" covers not only hitting, but base-running and position play. In the year this book was published, the "Yankee Clipper" achieved a batting average of .320, an on-base percentage of .396, and a slugging average of .598, with 155 runs batted in, 39 home runs (winning the American League home run title) and 355 total bases (leading the league). Included with this inscribed first edition are two legal contracts related to the sale and publication of Baseball for Everyone, that were in the possession of DiMaggio's lawyer Julian Rosenthal. The first is a four-page legal contract dated November 21, 1947, between DiMaggio, Rosenthal, Thomas W. Meany and Maron J. Simon (presumably the book's ghostwriters) and McGraw-Hill Book Company, spelling out the terms for the book's sale and signed by all involved, including DiMaggio. The second is a one-page notarized copy of an agreement, dated December 5, 1947, in which DiMaggio gives Rosenthal the rights to handle everything concerning the book "Joe DiMaggio's Baseball School" (the original title of the present book), signed by DiMaggio. Smith 549. Grobani 9-70.

Interior clean, cloth spine sunned; supplied dust jacket with light edge-wear, chip to spine head and tape repair on rear panel, bright and very good. Scarce and desirable inscribed by DiMaggio, and accompanied by interesting legal documents related to the book.
