"THE MOST FAMOUS ACCOUNT OF DRUG ADDICTION IN ENGLISH LITERATURE": FIRST EDITION OF DE QUINCEY'S CONFESSIONS OF AN ENGLISH OPIUM-EATER, 1822, IN ORIGINAL BOARDS

DE QUINCEY, Thomas. Confessions of an English Opium-Eater. London: Taylor and Hessey, 1822. Small octavo, original drab boards, uncut. Housed in a custom chemise and half morocco slipcase.

First edition of De Quincey's autobiographical classic, a pioneering personal account of drug addiction, scarce in original boards. The De Berkeley Parsons copy.

De Quincey first published this account of his addiction to opium in the October and November 1821 issues of London Magazine; it drew much attention, and this first printing in book form appeared in 1822. "The most famous account of drug addiction in English literature… De Quincey remainedan 'opium eater' throughout his life, but managed to control his addiction with some success" (Norman). The Confessions "have an air of reality and life… They are, indeed, very picturesque and vivid sketches of individual character and feelings, drawn with a boldness yet an exactness of pencil that is to be found only in one or two prominent geniuses of our day… They combine strong sense with wild and somewhat fantastic inventions, accuracy of detail with poetic illustration, and analytical reasoning and metaphysical research with uncommon pathos and refinement of ideas" (Allibone I:494). Without front flyleaf (blank), and without the rare advertisement leaf at rear. With half title. Norman Library of Science and Medicine 619. Tinker 817. Lowndes, 2026. From the collection of Katherine de Berkeley Parsons, of the prominent New York family, with bookplate.

Text clean, just a bit of light rubbing to boards, upper joint just starting, binding sound. A lovely, near-fine copy, scarce and desirable in unrestored original boards.
