“I BECAME ADDICTED TO THE SUBWAYS”

DAVIDSON, Bruce. Subway. (New York): Aperture, (1986). Oblong quarto, original gray cloth, original photographic dust jacket. Original press release.

First edition of this revealing photo-essay on the New York City subway system, with 60 full-page photographic color plates. Original Aperture press release laid in. From the collection of Peter Turnley.

In Davidson’s first extensive series in color, “subway riders are set against a gritty, graffiti-strewn background, displayed in tones Davidson describes as ‘an iridescence like that I had seen in photographs of deep-sea fish.” A Guggenheim Award-winner and the first person to win a photography grant from the NEA, Davidson spent five years documenting life in the New York City subway system. Subway is in keeping with his belief that “the street was a place I would go each day to see the invisible.” “Davidson’s gift is to teach us to see more fully” (Henry Geldzahler). Publisher’s press release laid in. See Roth 196; Parr & Badger II:18. From the collection of Peter Turnley, acclaimed photojournalist for Newsweek, Life and Harper’s Magazine, who has covered “almost every important international news event of the last 15 years” (New York Times).
