Following the Guidon

FIRST EDITION OF ELIZABETH CUSTER'S FOLLOWING THE GUIDON, 1890

(CUSTER, George A.) CUSTER, Elizabeth B. Following the Guidon. New York: Harper & Brothers, 1890. Octavo, original pictorial green cloth.

First edition of Elizabeth Custer's third book about her husband, General Custer, her final attempt at building his legacy as a Western war hero, in original cloth.

Elizabeth Custer was undoubtedly one of the strongest forces in rehabilitating her husband's reputation after his death at Little Big Horn. Elizabeth Custer's love for her husband was all-consuming and she was determined that her husband would not be known as a failed leader or, worse, a blunderer. Thus, she set forth to rewrite his story and, in doing so, to turn him into the Western hero and martyr that he is known as today. Following the Guidon is Elizabeth Custer's third biography of her husband, written in the first person, "describ[ing] their marriage and [his]experiences in the Civil War and subsequent Indian campaigns" (ANB). In this work, Elizabeth Custer is the political wife, showing her husband in his best light and, through her efforts, as he has come to be known in popular culture. Rader 1008.

Interior quite nice, light rubbing to cloth. An extremely good copy.
