IRVING, Washington. The Sketch Book of Geoffrey Crayon, Esq. London: John Murray, 1838. Two volumes. Small octavo, early 20th-century full red morocco gilt, onlaid hand-painted silk doublures, marbled endpapers, top edges gilt.

Early English edition of Irving’s most popular work, extra-illustrated with contemporary engravings, in marvelous exhibition binding by Bradstreet, containing intricate hand-painted doublures.

The pseudonymously published sketches include the immortal stories “Rip Van Winkle” and “The Legend of Sleepy Hollow.” This copy extra-illustrated with numerous contemporary engravings of people and places mentioned in the text. The fine exhibition binding by Bradstreet contains incredibly detailed hand-painted doublures, with wide intricate borders and classical muses as centerpieces. See BAL 10107-08.
