“YOU’VE GOT TO BE AN ARTIST BEFORE YOU CAN BE AN ILLUSTRATOR”: FIRST EDITION OF COOPER’S THE DEERSLAYER WITH N.C. WYETH’S BEAUTIFUL ILLUSTRATIONS

(WYETH, N.C.) COOPER, James Fenimore. The Deerslayer. New York: Charles Scribner’s Sons, 1925. Quarto, original black cloth, mounted cover illustration, pictorial endpapers, original dust jacket.

First edition with N.C. Wyeth’s brilliant illustrations, with nine full-page color plates and color vignette title page.

Wyeth told his students, “You’ve got to be an artist before you can be an illustrator.” Critics recognized this in Wyeth’s exemplary body of work. There is a “grand element in his personal style. It is what spoke to the countless youth in his paintings of mood and action… that power of both representing and commenting upon human life” (Allen & Allen, 179, 12). In illustrating The Deerslayer, initially published in 1841, Wyeth built upon his earlier work for Cooper’s The Last of the Mohicans (1919), continuing a long affiliation with the Scribner Illustrated Classics series which was initiated in 1911 with Wyeth’s illustrations for Treasure Island. Allen & Allen, 202. Bookseller ticket. “This Book Belongs To:_____” written in pen on half-title.

Book very nearly fine, bright dust jacket near-fine, with only light wear to extremities, one closed tear expertly repaired, and slight toning to spine. A lovely copy.
