“THIS WORK READS MORE LIKE AN ADVENTURE”: POPULAR ABRIDGED OCTAVO EDITION OF COOK’S THIRD VOYAGE, WITH 49 PLATES AND TWO FOLDING MAPS

COOK, James and KING, James. A Voyage to the Pacific Ocean, Undertaken by Command of his Majesty, for Making Discoveries in the Northern Hemisphere. London: Champante and Whitrow, et al., 1793. Four volumes. Octavo, contemporary full brown tree calf sympathetically rebacked in calf-gilt, black morocco spine labels.

Early abridged octavo edition of Cook’s third voyage, in search of the Northwest Passage, handsomely illustrated with a portrait frontispiece, 48 copper-engraved plates of native life in the Pacific Islands (including the folding "Death of Cook" plate), and two folding maps.

On Cook's third voyage (1776-79), he searched for the NorthWest Passage, charted the American west coast from northern California through the Bering Strait, and discovered the Hawaiian Islands, which he named the Sandwich Islands. "Cook was the first navigator to accurately map the [American northwest] coast, and, by carrying away a collection of furs, he introduced the fur trade to the English and American traders, whose subsequent expeditions were based upon his discoveries… no other contemporaneously printed source narrative is of comparable importance" (Eberstadt 127:353). This is the abridged octavo edition: "The abridged account is preferred by some readers because, the nautical and technical parts having been deleted, the work reads more like an adventure" (Hill, 62). The first abridged edition appeared in 1784. Beddie, Bibliography of Captain James Cook 1575. See Cox II:26; Howes C729a. Early owner ink signatures.

Interiors generally clean, with some offsetting from plates. Boards expertly restored. A beautiful copy in contemporary tree calf.
