“A VALUABLE REFERENCE FOR THE STUDY OF THE AMERICAN REVOLUTION”: TRANSCRIPTIONS OF THE ORIGINAL MANUSCRIPT JOURNALS OF CONGRESS

CONTINENTAL CONGRESS. Journals of the Continental Congress, 1774-[1783]. Edited from the Original Records in the Library of Congress by Worthington Chauncey Ford. Washington: Government Printing Office, 1904-22. Twenty-five volumes. Tall, thick octavo, original tan cloth, uncut, partially unopened.

Limited edition of this indispensable primary record of the nation’s formative years, the complete transcriptions of the Journals of the Continental Congress, one of only 2000 sets published for distribution to research libraries, legal historians, and members of Congress. Continuous run of the first 25 (of 34) volumes, covering the years 1774-83.

“A key work of historical scholarship and a valuable reference for the study of the American Revolution” (Larned, 6). The Journals of the Continental Congress were printed contemporaneously in different editions. None of these, however, contained the “Secret Journals” (confidential sections of the records), which remained unpublished until 1821. This cumulative edition is based on the original manuscript Journals and other manuscript records—some appearing in print for the first time—of the Continental and Confederation Congresses, including not only the “Secret Journals,” but also the “Rough Journals” and the “Corrected Journals.” Without volumes XXVI-XXXIV. Original prospectus laid in Volume I.

Occasional spotting and soiling to original cloth, bindings sound, interiors generally clean. A very good set.
