“ONE OF THE GREATEST OF THE GREAT RACE OF NEW ENGLAND SEA CAPTAINS”: FASCINATING ACCOUNT OF EARLY AMERICAN SEA VOYAGES TO CALIFORNIA AND THE PACIFIC NORTHWEST—THE STREETER COPY

CLEVELAND, Richard J. A Narrative of Voyages and Commercial Enterprises. Cambridge: John Owen, 1842. Two volumes. Octavo, original dark brown cloth, printed paper spine labels. Housed in a custom clamshell box.

First edition of this fascinating account of the daring voyages and trading ventures of Captain Cleveland, including descriptions of the Sandwich Islands (Hawaii), California, and the Northwest coast of the United States. This copy from the renowned Americana collection of Thomas W. Streeter, with his booklabels.

Cleveland, who won and lost several fortunes during his lifetime, “was one of the greatest of the great race of New England sea captains—intrepid, skillful, clean, temperate, honest” (DAB). Includes narratives of his expeditions to the northwest coast of America in the brig Caroline, 1799-1801, and the voyage of the Lelia Byrd to California in 1803-04. “The former is especially valuable for its accounts of the Indians and their country at this early date, and the latter as one of but two known accounts of the Battle of San Diego… Cleveland’s last voyage to the Pacific, on board the Beaver, 1817-20, funded by John Jacob Astor, was of particular importance because of his involvement in the wars between the Spaniards and the revolutionaries in Chile and Peru. Cleveland’s books are important for the historical data they contain about American trade in the Pacific with China, the northwest coast of America, and Latin America” (Hill). Sabin 13665. Howes C485. Streeter sale 2496 (this copy). Cowan, 131. Graff 764. Hill, Pacific Voyages 313. Booklabels of renowned Americana collector Thomas W. Streeter. Laid in signed bookplate of esteemed Americana collector Bruce McKinney.
