FIRST EDITION OF REPORTS OF THE NAVAL ENGAGEMENTS ON THE MISSISSIPPI RIVER, 1862, WITH TWO CHROMOLITHOGRAPHIC PLATES OF NAVAL RAMS AND THREE FOLDING MAPS OF NEW ORLEANS, ST. PHILIP, AND PORT JACKSON, IN ORIGINAL CLOTH

(CIVIL WAR). Reports of the Naval Engagements on the Mississippi River, Resulting in the Capture of Forts Jackson and St. Philip and the City of New Orleans, and the Destruction of the Rebel Naval Flotilla. Washington: Government Printing Office, 1862. Slim octavo, original blind- and gilt-stamped brown cloth.

First edition of this contemporary government report on the capture of New Orleans and the destruction of the Confederate flotilla during the Civil War, with two chromolithographs of the naval rams Manassas and Louisiana, a large folding map of the approaches to New Orleans, and two large folding maps of St. Philip and Fort Jackson, in original cloth.

This Government Printing Office publication comprises numerous official reports on the Union naval victories around the Mississippi and Gulf in April of 1862. It details Admiral Farragut's command of the Gulf Blockading Squadron and his successful capture Fort Jackson and Fort St. Philip as well as the city/port of New Orleans. The reports cover issues from reconnaissance to casualties and offer sequential retellings of the actual events on the ground. The two colored plates show the CSS Louisiana and CSS Manassas, the latter as it appeared after bombardment. The folding maps show Forts Jackson and St. Philip, as well as water and land approaches to New Orleans. Nevins I:236. Sabin 55373. Ex-library, with notation on both sides of List of Papers crossed out in blue marker.

Small closed tears at map stubs, plates re-tipped in at an early date, corner of page 107 torn, front inner paper hinge split, scattered marginal soiling to interior, slightest soiling to cloth, a bit of wear to extremities. An extremely good copy.
