Typed letter signed by Churchill thanking Tom Clarke, the editor of the Daily News and Westminster Gazette, for payment for the serialization of his successful 1930 memoir, My Early Life.

The letter reads in full: "My dear Mr Clarke ['e' handwritten], Many thanks for the cheque and for your most kind letter. It is a great pleasure to me to know that you do not regret the considerable outlay, which you incurr[handwritten]ed in this matter. I have also heard from Sir. W. Layton that the results are deemed to have been adequate and even satisfactory. It was very pleasant working with you and your colleagues, and I did not mind the drum-[handwritten hyphen]beating on my part. Yours very truly, [signed] Winston S. Churchill. Sir Walter Thomas Layton, referred to in the letter, was Chairman of the News Chronicle; he had been Churchill's statistical officer at the Ministry of Munitions during WWI, and would later run the Joint War Production staff during WWII. It was published in book form on October 20, 1930. Woods C154/I. See Cohen A91; Woods A37(a).
