Christo and Jeanne-Claude’s large-scale art projects have long been celebrated, from wrapping the Pont Neuf in fabric to installing colorful gates in Central Park. In 1984, they came up with the plan to install over 3100 large umbrellas along the coasts of Japan and the United States; sky blue for Japan and yellow for California, to complement the natural scenery. Their project finally reached fruition in 1991. This volume contains documentation of their artwork, from design through the planning stages to execution. It features numerous photographs by German photographer Wolfgang Volz, Christo’s exclusive photographer, at all stages of the construction and display of the umbrellas. Included are two large fabric swatches of the blue and yellow umbrella canvases. This copy is one of 500 not for sale, set aside for the use of Christo, Jeanne-Claude, Volz, and the publisher. Text in English and Japanese.

A fine copy.
