AN IMPORTANT COLLECTION OF STATE DIPLOMATIC PAPERS LEADING UP TO THE TREATY OF PARIS AND THE CESSATION OF THE FRENCH AND INDIAN WAR: SCARCE FIRST EDITION IN ENGLISH OF A HISTORICAL MEMORIAL OF THE NEGOTIATION OF FRANCE AND ENGLAND, 1761, HANDSOMELY BOUND

CHOISEUL, Etienne-François. An Historical Memorial of the Negotiation of France and England, from the 26th of March, 1761, to the 20th of September of the Same Year, with the Vouchers. London: Printed for D. Wilson, and T. Becket and P.A. Dehondt, 1761. Slim quarto, later three-quarter mottled brown calf, elaborately gilt-decorated spine, raised band, marbled boards, endpapers, and edges.

First edition in English of this fascinating collection of early French and British state papers pertaining to the 1763 Treaty of Paris that ended the French and Indian War, handsomely bound by Root & Son.

This work is composed of a collection of state diplomatic papers that preceded the eventual 1763 Treaty of Paris, the agreement that ended the French and Indian War. The diplomacy practiced in the years leading up to the Treaty halted tensions over Canada, established borders between British and French Louisiana, granted rights to fisheries all along the Atlantic Coast, and also established land borders with Spain and Portugal. This work was originally published by order of the French government in a blatant attempt to blame the British for ending peace negotiations. It was then quickly translated from the original French and printed in this first English edition the same year. Thus, this is a document of crucial importance, with a central role in fostering negotiations between the British and French (and in turning most of North America into British territory). Without half title. Sabin 47517. Howes M507. ESTC N17763.

Only slight soiling to a few leaves, light wear to binding. A handsome copy in near-fine condition. Very scarce.
