INSCRIBED BY JULIA CHILD IN THE MONTH OF PUBLICATION, ALSO SIGNED BY PAUL CHILD AND KNOPF PUBLICIST ELIZABETH BISHOP, PRESENTATION FIRST TRADE EDITION OF FROM JULIA CHILD’S KITCHEN

CHILD, Julia. From Julia Child’s Kitchen. New York: Alfred A. Knopf, 1975. Octavo, original pictorial coated cloth boards, original dust jacket.

First trade edition of Child’s fourth cookbook, a scarce presentation copy boldly inscribed by Julia Child in them month of publication to the wife of a Knopf associate, “For Betty Treeger—Bon Appetit—and thanks for the loan of your nice Howard! Julia Child 10/10/75,” additionally signed by Paul Child and by Knopf publicist, “+ Elizabeth Bishop,” in original dust jacket.

Child was the girl from Pasadena who revolutionized American cooking with her irrepressible humor, genial expertise, and her signature phrase, “Bon Appétit!” Winner of three Emmys, the Peabody Award, the National Book Award, and the French Légion d’Honneur, she was the first woman ever inducted into the Culinary Institute of America’s Hall of Fame and her kitchen has been installed in the Smithsonian. A “self-confessed ham, she became a darling of audiences… almost from the moment she made her debut in 1963 at the age of 50” (New York Times). Paul Child, Julia’s husband, provided the photographs and drawings that illustrate the book. Preceded by a signed limited edition of 1500 copies. With “First Edition” on copyright page; dust jacket with “10/75” on lower corner of rear flap. Recipient Betty Treeger was the wife of Knopf publishing associate Howard Treeger. Elizabeth Bishop, whose signature also appears, was a publicist at Knopf.

Interior fresh and clean, mild bubbling to cloth; slight edge-wear, minor soiling to dust jacket. A highly desirable near-fine inscribed copy.
